So you want to work together?
Fantastic! I’m glad you’re doing your research, and that you’ve arrived here in the process.
After many years of work experience I’ve found the general guidelines of what has worked well for me, and what has not. I’ve distilled the most important takeaways here.
Let me tell you about what gets me up in the morning:
-
Working on things at scale. I believe all problems become interesting at scale.
-
Creating new and innovative things at the fringes of technology. I’m not a academic researcher, but I love being at the forefront of change and discovery.
-
Working on things that make a notable impact in people’s lives. I call this “working on things that matter”, more on that below.
What I’m really good at:
-
I’m very good at pulling together work that requires knowledge from multiple fields. I love the fact that technology can overlap with almost every other field in existence.
-
I love working in open problem spaces and where there’s a lot of room for autonomy. I can take business goals and distill them down to technical plans.
-
I love working with technical and non-technical people alike. I have no problems “bridging the gap”, and am happy playing the role of team-maker.
-
You might know by now, but I’m a huge fan of trying new things. I love having the opportunity to work in new fields and areas of interest.
A few things you should know
-
My time on earth is limited, and I put great value into using it well; I enjoy nothing more than being maximally-effective at whatever it is that I’m doing. I believe in following opportunities through to their ends, and moving on when it’s time.
-
I’m very goal oriented, and very egalitarian with regards to power structures. I work best in teams where the report hierarchy is generally flat, and politics are kept to a minimum.
-
As discussed here, I no longer believe that the 6-9-9 startup work ethic is the best way to solve problems. I have no qualms with putting in the extra mile, but I strongly prioritize my life outside of work. I think clearheaded, proper decision making pays for itself in the short and long term.
